Itching (Pruritis Gravidarum)

This is an itchy condition unique to pregnancy and is caused by elevated… can you guess? That’s right, hormones. When the hormones estrogen and progesterone cause your liver to have a hard time getting rid of your bile salts, you skin may start to itch – even though there is no visible rash. The condition usually appears late in pregnancy, and will go away after delivery. Liver supporting herbs like Dandelion root or Yellow Dock can help. If your symptoms are severe or if you notice a yellow cast to your skin, or your palms or soles are affected, you should call your provider.
